Report by Mark Newson

This week as Westminster had its “Super Saturday”, The mighty D’s would have their own Super Saturday a few miles East down the Thames. Playing league leaders East London 3rds in their Merit 6 West encounter.

The afternoon started in the usual fashion, no one knowing who was turning up, who was playing where and who would get the only available 2XL shirt. Chris Thompson’s jubilee line train pulled into West Ham 2 minutes before kick off , and Mark Goodenough had to change on the side of the pitch flashing his meat and 2 veg to the Kings Cross Steelers of all people!

It turned out Dagenham would have a bare 15 and would need to front up man for man to overcome their opponents.

As the rain started to fall the game kicked off with the greasy ball causing scrappy initial exchanges. The D’s fronted up well in the scrums and there were some wrecking ball runs from Scott Ramsden and Tia.

After 10 minutes the deadlock was broken when debutant Jamie Impey saw a gap in the East London defence and darted through to draw first blood. Conversion missed 5-0. (Please note kicker Jon Lyme had forgot to bring his kicking boots for the afternoon!)

The hosts came back ferociously and despite some great tackling they shipped the ball wide to their pacey winger to cross the whitewash. 5-5.

The D’s regrouped and with great work from the forwards punched up field. The home team were denied possession, thanks in part to great work at the breakdown by Rawlinson and Meggs turning the ball over.

It wasn’t long before Impey shrugged off a couple of defenders and crossed again before half time. 10-5.

After the break the home side threw everything including the kitchen sink into getting the scores even. Some great defence from players 1-15 kept them at bay. Great tackles from Goodenough and Wilson in particular. The visitors managed to hold the ball up a couple of times over the try line. East London just could not get through.

A turnover ball was then shipped quickly wide to Wilson who used his pace to sprint the length of the pitch Forest Gump style and get his first try for the club. His smile beaming ear to ear!

After this the momentum was in the visitors favour and they finished the game off with 2 more for Impey and Scrum Half Lyme coming off a ruck and finding his way through the East London defence.

The D’s play was so slick any bystanders might have believed they were watching that other team in red and white hoops that took apart Scotland but a week earlier.

Final Score 30-5

A fantastic effort from all who pulled the shirt on. Special mention to 4 debutants who all had a great game. Jamie Impey, Alfie Sharman, Keiron Dunnage, Neil Richards.

As always thanks to East London for hosting and playing in good spirits.
