After last weeks let down, this week would finally see the Mighty Dagenham 3rds start their league campaign against Bancroft 2nds.
With more last minute drop outs than the local beauty school across the whole senior section, the remaining motley crew of 9 players made their way past the gaudy mansions and Range Rovers over to Buckhurst Hill. Bancroft very kindly evened up the sides to 13 players each and going into the wind the D’s kicked off their first 3rd team league fixture in over 10 years. The Bancroft pre-hour warm up worked well and the hosts quickly put 2 scores on the board through some rusty tackling. The men in red and white regrouped and through some nice play by fly half Matthews the ball was passed wide to a young Bancroft whipper-snapper in a Dagenham shirt who ran the length of the pitch to put the visitors first score on the board. Despite some great tackling from Goodenough and Ismael the Hosts then returned 2 more scores. Undeterred Dagenham punched their way up field, Eshan Warren boshing some Bancroft players along the way! A few pick and drives in front the line finally saw Drakey punch through for our 2nd try of the day. Half time called. After the break the visitors again pushed forward, some great running from Taz and his infamous dummies put through Jonny Smith to beat a couple of defenders and cross the whitewash. Was great to see the reunion of Harry Potter and Ron Weasley on the same pitch! After this I think the 3rd teams summer diet of junk food and beer took its toll and so the Hosts with their numerous fresh leg substitutions finished the game with a flurry of clinical tries!
Thanks to everyone who turned up and put a shirt on, and to Bancroft for being great hosts, lending players and playing in good spirits.
