Desperados at Thurrock

This week saw the mighty Desperados travel down the A13 to face Thurrock Vets in a re-match of their respective first teams facing off the previous week. We had the usual last minute drop-outs, missing kit and minimal warm-up (no one thought to bring a ball!) It was a worse fiasco than Rishi Sunak’s scrapping of HS2! But in any case, with the October sun shining the game kicked off. From the off it was all Thurrock who were pumped up for revenge from the previous Saturday. They scored a flurry of well worked tries with quick running and precision handling. The Desperados found themselves 33-0 down after around 30 minutes! But by now the visitors had managed to find some cohesion and found that by playing “up the jumper” rugby they could prevent Thurrock from scoring! This lead to a few drives in the Thurrock 22 with Taylor Bramley finally barrelling over the line for the first points of the day. Thurrock struck back again to make the half time score 38-5. After a half-time swig of a lovely Ruby Port the momentum changed to the visitors. The D’s spent a lot of the half camped in the opposition half. Some great breaks finally saw Joey Coughlin (in only his 2nd game of rugby) burst through for another score. This was quickly followed by fly-half Howard again slicing through for another. Curly Neil and Ibby also unfortunately being held up on another occasion! Despite some great tackling from the likes of Knowlden, Etherington and Sculfor, Thurrock did manage a couple of scores but the last score came from the D’s as Myers used his trademark step to get through the defence and run the rest of the pitch to score under the posts. Final Score 48-22

A great effort all round with the D’s “winning” the 2nd half. Was good to see some debutants in the famous red and white!
