Dagenham try and repel the Vikings!

This week saw the new Mighty 3rd team have their 2nd outing of the season as Benfleet Vikings came down the A13 to Central Park.
The 2 teams were a complete contrast. The Vikings spending an hour warming up with tackle bags etc, the Dagenham men preferring to keep warm in the changing rooms, Fricker managed to squeeze into his 3rd new pair of shorts of the season!
It looked like the Central Park boys were in for a bit of a hiding however from the off the hosts fronted up man for man and put everything on the line. The Vikings had a quick young back line but the D’s had a powerful pack and effective line-out. The first scrum saw Dagenham totally demolish the Benfleet pack.
After 20 minutes the game was well matched and pegged at 0-0.
The visitors managed to break the deadlock and run a well worked try exploiting holes in the Dagenham defence. The D’s regrouped and worked their way up the field, thanks in part, to the boot of fly-half Scott Ballard. Despite being camped in the Benfleet 22, the Vikings annoyingly broke away and scored against the run of play. 0-12.
Dagenham didn’t let their heads go down and again came back fighting. After a quick tap penalty Ian Fergie managed to cross the whitewash on the stroke of half time, going off with cramp in the process! Serves him right for running sideways! Conversion slotted, halftime score of 7-12
The second half saw the D’s use the pick and go game-plan which worked to great effect. As the D’s got near the try line, yours truly grabbed the ball and resembling a salmon, dived over a ruck to ground the ball! Conversion missed made it 12-12 with half hour to go.
Again despite being camped in their 22 for long periods the quick Benfleet backs broke free and scored.
After this unfortunately the D’s run out of puff and the Vikings added more scores, however before the final whistle, Centre Jon Lyme managed to burst through the Benfleet defence and add another score for the D’s.
Final Score 17-43
Considering the difference in the teams, the Dagenham boys did themselves proud and were right in the game until the last 20 minutes.
Well done to the new lads Dan and Ismael who both had a good game.
Thanks to Benfleet for coming down to us!
Big thanks as well to Perry Cook for refereeing the game.
